Most Underlined Buyer Review : Just ok, but better than the other travel guitars
After trying a few travel guitars I settled on this one. First I tried the Washburn Rover. It was the best in playability and sound, except the smell of the paint was atrocious. You'll see many reviews complaining of this, I really don't know what they put in that stuff. Next was the Martin Backpacker. This was good in the sound department but the neck was like a thick end of a baseball bat. I've never had a problem with guitar necks, I play a les paul, too, which is at the thicker end of guitar necks, and the Martin's neck still felt Huge.

So I settled on this Johnson. Frankly, there's nothing to really rave about. The sound is ok, much softer and not as nice as the other two. The tuners aren't that great and needs to be tuned slightly every few days. The playability is good, not as good as the Rover but way better than the Martin. So basically this one wins only because it doesn't smell like poison and doesn't have a tree trunk of a neck.

Look at Various other Purchaser Testimonial
Sound is underwhelming, but good for kids and practice.
My 9 year old son has been playing on electric and acoustic 3/4 scale guitars for a while, and we wanted to graduate him to a "regular" guitar, but all of the ones we tried did not fit his frame, and he struggled to find a comfortable position to play in. Even the thin-line Yamaha APX guitars were too big, and that was the smallest of the full scale guitars we tried. I accidentally ran across this guitar on Amazon, and the reviews and price were good, so I thought we'd give it a shot. After setup and tuning, I let my son have a go at it, and although he struggled to play some of the chords at first because it's a full size neck, he actually enjoyed playing it, and his fingers acclimated to it in a few days. The sound is a bit bright and twangy, and sustains are underwhelming, but this isn't one of those guitars anyone would perform with, so it's adequate for it's purpose. The sound isn't as bad as most of the guitars in this price range, so based on value, I would rate the sound 8 of...

Mahogany Traveler playable and pleasantly quiet
I selected this traveler for the "real" neck which is very comfortable and playable for fingerpicking. I use a strap to support the weight of the neck. Takes a bit of getting used to -- finding how to hold it for comfortable right hand attack. The sound is rather thin, but pleasing, the small stiff spruce top is heavily X-braced, bridge saddle is compensated, body and neck binding look good. Appearance is handsome and sturdy with classy trim. Not afraid to take it outside. useful case. Indoors, it is quiet enough to play around TV, etc, without chasing everyone out. If you want more volume, tho, better get the bigger model!
This is my second Johnson guitar and both have exceeded my expectations for build quality-- potentially worth 5-stars --but not perfect on arrival: both guitars needed fret leveling & setup to reach potential. my well setup D-28 plays better, of course, but these Johnsons, at one-tenth the price, deliver 95% of the gold standard performance... and I can...
